Nyamat, the Therapist

I've been in independent practice since 2019, working with clients online and in person. I trained as a psychotherapist and taught at the Master's level at Maniben Nanavati Women's College, under SNDT university in Mumbai before transitioning to a full-time practice during the pandemic.

My therapeutic approach has evolved over the years. I initially started with talk therapy- exploring what brought you to therapy with a dialogue. But increasingly, I realized the body has a big part to play too. So I began integrating somatic work, IFS (Internal Family Systems), and narrative therapy in my practice. Which essentially means working with the body's memory; working with different parts of you- the ones the world sees, and the ones you keep hidden; and then working with the stories you have written for yourself, helping you reauthor them when they no longer fit.

Since the last two years, I've gravitated toward psychoanalysis- with more readings, training and seeking supervision around it. I'm interested in the unconscious patterns that shape your relationships, your work, your life and how those patterns show up in the here and now, in the room between us.

Nyamat, the Person

I was very academically oriented and thought I wanted to be a doctor. I studied for it, prepared for medicine in the 12th standard, the whole thing. But something about it did not speak to the more emotion-driven, sensitive parts of me. Psychology made sense in a way medicine didn't.

Becoming a therapist felt aligned with who I actually was. It allows me to work with people who exist within oppressive systems that the world is dominated by, and find ways of resistance, big and small.

In my free time, I enjoy reading fiction (Sorrow and Bliss, I'm Sorry You Feel That Way, Crying in H-Mart, Goodbye Vitamin are some favourites), spending time with animals and walking among trees.
